Guatemala’s Highlands

This sample Guatemala holiday takes in some of Guatemala’s best and less well-known points of interest. This holiday combines colonial Antigua and beautiful Lake Atitlán with a journey through the highlands to visit the ‘Ixil Triangle’, and over to Coban for a guided hike in the Biotopo del Quetzal, and a swim in the turquoise coloured pools of Semuc Champey. Travel north, swapping the cloudforest for the rainforest, with an en route stop to visit the Maya ruins at Ceibal. Visit the grandest of all the Maya sites – Tikal – before turning east to the Caribbean coast for a stay in the Garifuna village of Livingston.

ITINERARY:

DAY 1:

Your holiday begins as you fly to Guatemala City, where upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel in the former colonial capital city of Antigua.

DAY 2:

Enjoy a walking tour of Antigua to to explore the city and orientate yourself whilst visiting some of the sites that remain from the Spanish Colonial times.

DAY 3:

Day at leisure. Options to visit a coffee or macadamia plantation, a local weaving co-operative, climb Pacaya Volcano or try out some thrilling white-water rafting or zip-lining.

DAY 4:

Travel over to Panajachel, located on the shores of the picturesque Lake Atitlán. En route enjoy a stop-off to visit a bustling local market at either Chichicastenango or Sololá.

DAY 5:

Enjoy a boat trip out over the lake to visit one of the local communities, where you can earn about their customs and traditions in this beautiful part of the world.

DAY 6:

Travel north into Guatemala’s highlands, passing through indigenous villages and countryside most affected by the civil war, which took place in the 1980s.

DAY 7:

Learn about the culture and tradition of the Ixil community, who live by the Cuchamatan Mountains. Onwards travel to Cobán to end the day with a visit to the Biotopo del Quetzal.

DAY 8:

Full-day trip where you can swim and soak in the turquoise-coloured pools and waterfalls of Semuc Champey – which means ‘Where the River hides under the Earth’.

DAY 9:

Descend from the cloudforest to the rainforests of Guatemala’s north. En route take the boat to visit the Maya ruins at Ceibal before ending the day on the island town of Flores.

DAY 10:

Guided-visit to the magnificent ruins at Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Extending more than 16 square kilometres, the city is comprised over 3000 structures.

DAY 11:

Travel first by road then by boat to Guatemala’s Caribbean coast and stay in the Garifuna town of Livingston.

DAY 12:

Enjoy a boat trip down the Rio Dulce, visiting Bird island, a local community project and the impressive San Felipe Fort.

DAY 13:

Transfer to Guatemala City. Stop en route to visi Quirigua Maya ruins, most well-known for their amazing stelae which would have been highly-painted in their day.

DAY 14:

Your Guatemala holiday draws to a close as you are transferred to Guatemala City International Airport ahead of your flight home or further afield.
