The above sample Guatemala holiday takes in some of Guatemala’s best-known and some of its less well-known points of interest, combining charming colonial Antigua and beautiful Lake Atitlán with a journey through the highland towns to visit the ‘Ixil Triangle’ and then on over to Coban for a guided hike in the Biotopo del Quetzal, and a swim in the turquoise coloured pools of Semuc Champey. As you travel north to Tikal and you swap the cloudforest for the rainforest stop en route to visit the Maya ruins at Ceibal. Visit the grandest of all the Maya sites – Tikal – before turning east to the Caribbean coast for a stay in the Garifuna village of Livingston.

Guatemala Highlands

Day 1

Guatemala City

Fly to Guatemala City and transfer to the former colonial capital of Antigua.

Day 2

Antigua

Morning City Tour to orientate yourself, then rest of the day at leisure to finish exploring this charming town, with its cobbled streets and scenic back-drop of volcanoes.

Day 3

Antigua

Day at leisure. Visit the Jade Museum or the local market. Visit a coffee plantation, a weaving co-operative, climb Pacaya Volcano, relax in some local hot springs, go horse-riding or white-water rafting. Or simply sip a coffee in the central Plaza des Armas and watch the world go by.

Day 4

Lake Atitlán

Transfer to Lake Atitlán, visiting the colourful local market at Chichicastenango or Sololá en route.

Day 5

Lake Atitlán

Take a boat tour across the Lake to visit one of the communities who live around the Lake and learn about their customs and traditions.

Day 6

Acul

Travel north into the highlands, passing through indigenous villages and countryside most affected by the civil war of the 1980s.

Day 7

Ixil Triangle - Cobán

The Ixil community lives in the 3 towns situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by the Cuchamatan Mountains. Learn about their culture and traditions before travelling on to Cobán to end the day with a visit to the Biotopo del Quetzal.

Day 8

Cobán

Day trip over to the turquoise-coloured pools and waterfalls of Semuc Champey.

Day 9

Flores

Descend from the cloudforest to the rainforests of Guatemala's north. En route take the boat to visit the Maya ruins at Ceibal before ending the day on the island town of Flores.

Day 10

Flores

Today will one of the holiday's high-lights when you visit the magnificent ruins at Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Extending more than 16 square kilometres, the city comprised over 3000 structures.

Day 11

Livingston

Travel first by road then by boat to Guatemala's Caribbean coast and stay in the Garifuna town of Livingston, only accessible by boat.

Day 12

Livingston

Enjoy a boat trip down the Rio Dulce, visiting Bird island, a community project and San Felipe Fort.

Day 13

Guatemala City

Transfer to Guatemala City. Stop en route to visi Quirigua Maya ruins, most well-known for their amazing stelae which would have been highly-painted in their day.

Day 14

Transfer to the airport for your flight home
